There are several other
problems with the depth-
processing explanation of the
Ponzo illusion. Suppose, for
example, that the test lines are
made unequal in length, as
shown in the illustration at
left. The test lines in the figure
should now represent two
objects of equal length, with
one being farther from the
observer than the other. If the
two horizontal lines are placed
within converging lines that
create an impression of depth,
one would expect the observer
to perceive the two horizontal
lines as more nearly equal in
length. When Arien Mack of the
New School for Social Research
and I tested this prediction,
however, we found only a small
effect. Observers perceived the
horizontal lines more or less
veridicallyΓÇöΓÇôthat is, they
perceived them to be as unequal
as their size ratio would
